There are many different ideas round what conscience is, where it comes from and how it should be defined. Kant would say that conscience is your obligation and it is your debt instrument to obey it. Moore would say that your conscience is an instinctive faculty that allows us to choose between business and wrong. Our conscience, he believes, is what makes humans different from animals. We have the capacity to have awareness of our actions and observe if an action is right or wrong. Aquinas holds that there are two parts to the conscience: synderesis and conscientia. Syderesis is governed by the synderesis blueprint that states that as humans we should seek good and avoid evil.

Synderesis is our right reason and is the part of our conscience that knows whether an action is right or wrong. Conscientia is the part of the conscience involved in the decision making and coming to an ethical decision. Aquinas believes that we need to educate and avow our conscience and are required to check our decision with the Bible, teachings of innate Law and the Primary Precepts. Once we have made a correct ethical decision, Aquinas argued that we have a duty to obey our conscience.
