What two readings did you most enjoy in World of Ideas and in Dubliners? Why? I greatly enjoyed reading the Plato, The Allegory of the Cave, Plato asks us to imagine the following scenario: A group of heap set out lived in a deep cave since birth, never beholding any daylight at either. These people be jounce in such a way that they cannot look to every side or behind them, but scarce clean ahead. Behind them is a fire, and behind the fire is a partial derivative wall. On top of the wall are various statues, which are moderated by another group of people, laying out of sight. Because of the fire, the statues drop off shadows on the wall that the prisoners are facing. The prisoners watch the stories that these shadows play out, and because this is all they can ever see, they believe that these shadows are the most rattling things in the world. When the converse with one another about men, women, trees, horses, and so on, they refer only to these shadows. Then one of the prisoners are freed from his bonds, and is subject to look at the fire and the statues themselves.

After initial irritation and disbelief, he eventually genuinelyizes that all these things are more real than the shadows he has always believed to be the most real things; he grasps how the fire and the statues together caused the shadows, which are copies of the real things. I love this story because it tells us the realities of today and how people allow media to manipulate the populace with the shadows, to entertain and sedate our inquiries with lies. This story illustrates why people should not believe stories on the news or net and take those stories as face value, as truth. Like the freed prisoner we must not just be in the visual realm, where we can grasp with our senses, but the intelligible realm, which we can only grasp with the mind.
