The Practice Of Peace

Im delighted indeed to be rest here. The unlikelihood of it strikes me as profoundly as the honor, of which I am deeply conscious. In addition to the rest of an almost surrealistic context, today is my birthday. Im 63 today, the same get on as the century was when I was a student here. Actu eachy, though, I defecate to confess that I left Indiana University without a lambskin â€" the actual object, I mean, I had done (just barely) all the course work. I owed library fines, I think it was, and so was denied the diploma till I paid, which I never did. (I comfort can, I know, and I will, if need be.) Many years posterior â€" at least ten and maybe twenty â€" my diploma arrived in the mail, with a note from the College saying that they had come upon it piece of music cleaning out some files, and thought Id like to have it, which I thought was very smorgasbord of them. I did like to have it, and I still have it. I think. Somewhere.

The notion of the arts of peace (the term itself is I suppose not original with me) first arose for me spontaneously a year or more ago, when I received a letter â€" well, an e-mail, I mean, naturally â€" from an MFA candidate in musical composition at the University of Massachusetts, near where I live. I knew Andre slightly from parties and as a clerk in the best bookstore in Amherst.

I can place the time of the letter by his first reference:
Ive been bummed since Susan Sontag died, he wrote. For me, she is the most important intellectual.... Its uncanny trying to mourn for someone who you didnt know but who changed you so much (and the world, for that matter). So â€" I dont know, how do you mourn Susan Sontag? take aim a novel by someone from eastern atomic number 63? Watch a German film? Go to the ballet? Go to Iraq? It seems so stupid to even try.
He continues whence: I wonder - if you dont mind me asking such a dreadful question - where you think your work fits in the world. and I dont mean the world of letters - I mean the world...what do you think its doing out...If you want to get a full essay, recount it on our website: Orderessay
